Did you know, engraving wood is one of our favorite things to engrave? It’s one of those materials that sometimes surprises us, once we’ve run the engraving because it’s the wood itself that determines the final look.
With wood, there are many factors that play a part in the engraving – the type of wood, the colour, multi-colours, hardness, softness, knots, number of grains, and how close the grains are together. Generally speaking, the lighter and softer the wood is, the easier it is to engraving, and the more visible it will be. But, if you’ve got dark wood, that doesn’t mean it can’t be engraved, it just means we have to up the power a bit.
Sometimes we get asked if we can make the engraving “charred” on wood, and if you’re one of those people, I’m sorry to say that answer is “no”. Laser engraving is a burning process (if you think of an onion, we’re peeling away layers), but in order to get “char” we essentially have to set it on fire …which is NOT a good thing inside a laser!
We’ve certainly engraved a variety of different wood pieces over the years – everything from canoe paddles, to tables, Muskoka chairs, picture frames, watches (ever seen a wooden watch before? – they’re pretty cool!), barn boards, charcuterie boards, live edge boards, clocks, clothes hangers, carrying trays, hammers, keepsake boxes, pens, and gift baskets, just to name a few.
To give you an idea of some of the wood pieces we’ve engraved, please see the image gallery below. We hope you enjoy!
Thanks for visiting, and we hope you have a great day!
