Leather Engraving

Leather is another material we get asked about, "Can you engrave leather?".

Leather, like wood, is ...for the most part... easily engravable.  We've engraved leather wallets, belts, portfolios, journals, handbags, purses, shoes, and knife sheaths.

We've had a few baseball teams come in as well, and ask us if we can personalize their players leather gloves with their name!  Obviously, yes, that's also something we can do.

We've also engraved tradesman's tools, their tool belts, and gloves.  Unique wedding party favors like hatchets (I'm presuming they're going "axe throwing") and mini-purses have also been known to frequent our laser.

I'd say the most surprising piece we've done, is personalizing a Fossil purse.  We engraved the outside of it, and it came out exactly as we expected.  But, when we engraved the inside flap, it came out a completely different colour!  Turns out, they didn't manufacture the purse with a single piece of leather, instead it had multiple layers of leather to make up the thickness.

THE TRICK OF
ENGRAVING LEATHER

The biggest concern we have with working with leather, especially when someone brings us in something that we haven't seen before, is trying to figure out how thick the layer of leather is.  If it's a really soft and thin leather, it's very possible the laser will cut right through it (like a hot knife through butter) if we're not careful.

So, usually our approach is to treat leather like fine glassware, just a little bit of power on a higher speed will help give us an idea of how durable the leather is.  It's FAR safer to engrave the leather over multiple passes (if we have concerns with it) to ensure the best result possible.

  • COLOR PLAYS A FACTOR

Generally speaking, the lighter the better.

  • THICKNESS PLAYS A FACTOR

The thicker the better, but sometimes that’s hard to tell.

  • WHAT ABOUT "PLEATHER"

Yes, we can also engrave fake leather too!
